Hi. My name is Steve Kuhl. I'm a Christian theologian who is looking for a way to share my wares with the world. By "wares" I mean the good news of God in Jesus Christ. By "the world" I mean whomever I find myself with. In this moment that would be you.
My passion is Christ's passion
My mission is to connect faith in Christ with daily life
My method is to use Luther's distinction between law and gospel
My hope is that what I do will speak also to you.
I strive to do this by sharing essays and articles on various topics and themes that involve the interaction of faith and life and by offering online courses that do the same.
In my college years I studied Areospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Minnesota where I received both a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in the field. After working for an Aerospace firm in St. Louis, MO, I left that field to study theology. I received an MDiv Degree from Christ Seminary-Seminex (St. Louis) in 1982 and a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 1993.
I have been an ordained Lutheran pastor (now in the ELCA) since 1984 and thanks to that credentialing, over the years, I have had the privilege of serving in wide array of ecumenical setting both as a teacher and as a pastor. With regard to teaching, I have served as a Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at St. Francis de Sales Seminary (Milwaukee), Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee) and Lakeland University (Sheboygan, WI). Besides general courses, I also taught specialized courses in the area of Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations and Theology and Science.
I've also had the privilege of providing pastoral ministry in both Lutheran and Episcopalian parishes over the years, serving presently at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in South Milwaukee, WI. You're welcome to join us (http://stmarkssouthmilwaukee.org/index.html) whenever you are in the area. As a member of the Crossings Community, visit its site( https://crossings.org ) and see more about the art of distinguishing Law and Gospel with the goal of connecting the gospel to daily life.
Two professors have influenced me greatly, Robert W. Bertram and Edward H. Schroeder, both of blessed memory. They both taught at Christ Seminary-Seminex until it was "deployed" (1984), taking Bertram to the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, where he served as my "Doctorvater," and Schroeder to lead (in partnership with Bertram) an innovative, approach to theological education called The Crossings Community or Crossings for short. I was privileged to serve as the President of the Board of Directors of Crossings from 1999 to 2014 and its Executive Director from 2014 to 2018.
Crossings is about bringing Luther's law-Gospel theology into dialogue with daily life through the study of the Sunday Lectionary text with pastors and laity. The brilliance of Crossings is the way it "packaged" Luther's insight about Law and Gospel: the Gospel is God's own Christ-centered solution to the Law, which is God's revelation of our God-sized problem. The Law is God's own step by step diagnosis or critique of the human condition and the Gospel is God's own step by step prognosis or remedy for that problem. Law and Gospel, problem and solution, connect/cross through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Just as movie director, Ron Howard, says the human story consists of one grand story-line that is being played out in infinite variety, so too is the God story. It's the story of struggle for reconciliation between the Creator and his creatures, Holy God and sinful humanity. Crossings Courses are designed to make that story-line clear and real, thoughtful and believable. They are designed to make "faith think and thought believe."
